Architecture
Microcosm of the Future City
We inhabit a capitalist world characterized by a rigid hierarchy, largely driven by the dominance of petroleum. However, as our finite reserves of petroleum dwindle, alternative energy options are emerging, ushering in a shift in the dynamics of the economy, power structures, technology, and urban landscapes. This transformative process is known as lateralization.
Lateralization signifies a departure from the traditional linear paradigm, and with it, the conventional routine of commuting between home and work gradually fades away. Instead, a new way of life emerges, one centered around the production and consumption of goods—an existence that is increasingly product-based.
In this product-based life, individuals from diverse professions embrace self-employment, crafting and selling their own creations. Moreover, the potential for lateral associationism arises, fostering collaborations across different fields and disciplines.
In light of these indicators of a new era, the question arises: What kind of architecture do we require to navigate this evolving landscape?
To explore this question, an experimental project will take place in Istanbul, Turkey—a country characterized by its rich tapestry of races, cultures, and industries, with a vibrant creative sector poised to take center stage. This project aims to anticipate the future needs of this dynamic society and propose architectural responses that align with the emerging paradigm.
